Taunton is the county town of Somerset; it’s a place with a rich military history and religious roots that go back for more than 1,000 years – the monastery is still standing today, at least the barn is, although it’s now home to the Somerset Cricket Museum. Speaking of the greatest sport in the history of the world, Taunton’s County Ground is one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the whole of the UK. As you’ll see in this guide, it’s one of the many fun and interesting ways that you can pass the time in Taunton. Our three hotels in Taunton will keep you in the heart of the action, whatever you choose to do. As we’re in the south west, there are plenty of places in town for you to sip on a cider, but with rolling countryside as far as the eye can see, you can also get outdoors with a huge range of activities ranging from a visit to the castle to an adrenaline-pumping spot of caving.
Things to do in Taunton
Culture
Down here in the south west, our idea of culture might be different from most. You can forget The Louvre and the Guggenheim, we’ve got cider and cricket museums! Taunton’s also home to the West Country Carnival that’s been running since 1605, along with flower shows, literary festivals and more.
Entertainment
Taunton might not be the biggest of towns, but when it comes to keeping our guests entertained it more than manages to make do. You’ll find a slew of live-music venues, theatres, comedy shows, and sporting arenas – including the County Ground, famous the world over (to cricket fans, at least)!
Places to eat
When dining out, choose from traditional Italian restaurants, where you can enjoy a trattoria-style sing-along, to American grill houses that serve up monstrous amounts of food. Looking for lunch, or breakfast? We’ve got cafés covered, and found the best full English in the area.
Nightlife
Most of the nightlife options in Taunton consist of guzzling copious amounts of cider in our endless array of pubs and inns. But that’s not to say that you can’t also enjoy a cocktail or two in some of its unique bars. And we’ve also got Zinc nightclub to take things into the early hours of the next day.
Getting around
Travelling around Taunton has never been easier. In a prime location just off Junction 25 of the M5, of course you can come by car. For everything else, you could find our guide to getting around useful. It covers airport transfers from Exeter and Bristol, as well as information about our trains and buses.
