Places to eat in Stockport

Just a few miles from Manchester, you might expect Stockport’s food scene to exist in the shadows of its big city sibling. That isn’t the case here though, with a variety of top-notch restaurants and cafés including Sicilian street food, the north of England’s only Cambodian eatery and a brilliant gastropub serving a range of world foods.

Restaurants

We start our guide to the best restaurants in Stockport with a great little Italian on Broadstone Road in Reddish. A Tavola serve their Sicilian street food in a relaxed, dining room-style setting and the locals flock to eat there. They combine authentic Sicilian recipes with local produce, and the result is a fantastic eating experience.

Sticking with Mediterranean food, this time in the form of a Greek restaurant, we recommend Rozafa. This taverna on St. Petersgate, just a short stroll from our Stockport Central hotel, isn’t fancy, but it proves that if you do the simple things well, then the results can be excellent. The atmosphere is very welcoming here – you may even find the owner cracking some cheesy jokes whilst he serves your table.

If subcontinental cuisine is what you fancy, then Bombay to Mumbai in Bramhall is a restaurant that we can’t recommend enough. The interesting menu and authentic, modern decor exceed the usual expectation of an Indian eatery, and so does the food! The street food starters are top-notch, and the variety of vegetable or meat mains provide vegetarians and carnivores alike with plenty of choice.

Rounding off our list of restaurants is The Midway, a delightful gastropub on New Bridge Lane. The menu is a cosmopolitan mix of cuisines such as British, Italian, Mexican and more. The food is lovingly cooked to order, and the chef’s turn out some brilliant daily specials. The warm and relaxed atmosphere and wide range of drinks to accompany your meal make this a great place to eat.

Cafés

Stockport’s cafés continue to fly the flag for the town’s excellent food scene, with a wide variety serving delicious drinks and light bites. First up on our list is Berretto Lounge on Bridgefield Street. This quirky joint is a really great place to stop and relax in Stockport, with great food, loads of choice for drinks and some local memorabilia dotted around the walls, such as a mural commemorating the town’s hat making heritage.

For something a bit off-piste, head to Angkor Soul in Marple. It is the only Cambodian eatery in the north, but when you try it, you will wish there was more. There is always great music playing here straight from the record player, and they even have a vinyl shop section downstairs.

Coffee connoisseurs are encouraged to make their way to Rhode Island Coffee House, tucked away behind Merseyway Shopping Centre. The baristas here are highly trained and knowledgeable, and you can rest assured that they have a keen eye on sustainability too. If you are feeling peckish, then be sure to opt for one of their sandwiches, hot paninis or cakes.
