There’s a handful of great bars in and around Stockport. One of the most popular is Remedy Bar, beside Merseyway Shopping Centre on Market Place. It is an inviting micro-brewery with a stripped-back decor that serves a fantastic range of craft beers, real ales and top-notch food. It’s perfect for a pit stop after a shopping spree, and just a couple of minutes’ walk from our Stockport Central hotel.
If Remedy sounds like your type of place, you will love Heaton Hops, too. This tap house and bottle shop on School Lane was voted Best Craft Ale Bar at the 2016 Manchester Food and Drink Awards, and it’s easy to see why with their fine selection of craft drinks and relaxed atmosphere. The best bit is, if you love their beer that much, you can take some home with their bottles or draught flagons.
If wine is your tipple of choice, head to Thom’s Bar on Heaton Moor Road, around three miles north of the city centre. It serves a variety of whites, reds, roses and fizz, as well as a cocktail menu consisting of classics such as mojitos and old fashioneds. The food here is also highly regarded, so there’s no need to go hungry.
The choice of great pubs is undoubtedly one of the strengths of this historic former mill town. One of the best is Ye Olde Vic on Chatham Street, near the railway station. It’s pretty small, but this just adds to its charm, along with the charismatic landlord, retro memorabilia adorning the walls and the roaring fire in winter. There’s also a constantly rotating se lection of ales and ciders, making this a great spot to try something new.
Just a stroll – or stumble – down the road is The Royal Oak, situated just a mile from our Stockport South hotel. This is a particular favourite of football fans, given its close proximity to Edgeley Park stadium, but it is also popular on non-match days. It serves award winning drinks from the town’s local brewery, Robinsons, and is complete with a spacious beer garden and games room.
Just north of the town centre, in Heaton, you will find two more fantastic watering holes. The first of which is The Magnet Freehouse on Wellington Road North. This family-run pub serves a 14-strong variety of cask ales, which are regularly rotated. The decor is very welcoming and homely, and the same can be said about the atmosphere.
Possibly saving the best until last, Nursery Inn on Church Lane in Heaton is a former CAMRA National Pub of the Year winner. Its reputation for serving the best beers around is justified, and the tasteful country-style decor makes it a wonderful place to go for a pint.
