Stockport Plaza on Mersey Square is a prime venue for theatre-goers in the own. Housed in a brilliantly restored 1930’s Art Deco cinema, this characterful theatre welcomes performances of all kinds – from drama and dance to comedy and films, and everything in between. As well as the 1314-seat theatre, it features a gallery where you can find out more about its history, a small intimate performance room and a café for visitors to enjoy.
Opened in 1901, Stockport Garrick Theatre is a smaller, yet equally historic theatre venue in the town. With a capacity of just 151, it is thought to be the oldest ‘little theatre’ in Britain, and its amateur plays are very popular with the locals. You get a strong sense of community here, which adds to the charm. It is located on Wellington Road South, near the Hat Works museum and just a short walk from our Stockport Central hotel, and is well worth a visit if you have a free evening in Stockport.
At Edgeley Park, you will find the town football club, Stockport County. Currently residing in the semi-professional leagues of English football, the club have endured some bad times over recent years, which caused them to drop out of the professional football league. That doesn’t stop the loyal ‘hatters’ fans – nicknamed after the town’s hat making heritage – from supporting their team, though, with an average attendance of around 3,500; the highest in the National League North.
The ground is just a mile from our Stockport South hotel, making it easily within walking distance. As you wander to the game, you will find pubs such as The Royal Oak and Edgeley & Shaw Heath Labour Club, which both welcome visitors. There’s also a number of takeaway food outlets on Castle Street, just next to the stadium.
Stockport’s music scene is slightly overshadowed by that of nearby Manchester. That said, there are some great little venues if you are looking for some top quality amateur and live tribute music. The first of which is The Spinning Top, a popular bar on Wellington Road South. With a wide range of drinks, and an even wider range of acts, this place has developed a strong reputation as one of the best intimate music venues in the area. See who’s on during your stay, or just turn up and enjoy the surprise.
Next up is the Arden Arms, a multi-award-winning Robinsons Brewery pub on Millgate. Heavily featured in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, there is live music on here every Friday and Saturday during the summer months in their cosy courtyard.
