Unless you drive into Bishop’s Stortford or to Harlow, there’s not much in the way of cocktail bars and nightclubs around Stansted. However, the countryside location does mean there are some truly excellent local pubs serving up real ale with log fires in the winter and beer gardens in the summer. Here are just a few of the best pubs in Stansted.
Pubs in Stansted
The Dog and Duck is not only a pub with an excellent name: it also covers many of the pub essentials, with a large beer garden, a wide range of beers and wines, and a classic pub grub menu. The dog friendly pub is on the northern edge of Stansted and a short distance from the castle and Norman village.
Further north, past the village cricket and football pitch, is The Rose & Crown, which has been serving up food and drink since the 1800s. Another dog friendly establishment, they have a wood-burning stove in winter, and plenty of space in the beer garden for the summer, alongside a small kids’ playground. They serve up lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, covering everything from hearty roasts to special Thai nights.
Heading back towards the heart of Stansted and located next to a working windmill is The Cock, another warm and welcoming public house. It is popular with locals, thanks to its range of beers, a large deck and beer garden, plus dart board and all the live sporting action on TV. The pub also puts on regular live music sessions and a monthly pub quiz.
One of the closest pubs to Stansted Airport, The Ash Pub is a classic British watering hole, right down to the low ceilings stacked with vintage wooden beams. The Ash serves up a more-than-decent range of cask ales, wines and boutique gins and does one of the best Sunday roasts in the region.
Heading down towards Bishop’s Stortford, The Three Willows is a cricket themed pub and one of the closest public houses to our London Stansted Airport hotel. The food is excellent – save space for the cheese board if you can – and it’s another great pub for families, with a large play area in an enclosed garden for younger children.
