Things to do in Shrewsbury

It’s no surprise that Shrewsbury gets named one of the happiest places to live in the UK. Nestled in a nook of the River Severn, the historic ‘Town of Flowers’ offers photo opportunities at every turn. Plus, with over 1,000 years of history to its name – much of it intertwined with the castle and abbey – there’s plenty of fascinating days out, too. Our Shrewsbury hotels are perfect for ticking off the town’s top attractions, sampling the excellent food scene, indulging in a shopping spree, taking a trip to the revered Theatre Severn, or revelling in some late night dancing at The Buttermarket. With something for everyone, you’ll never be left wondering what to do in Shrewsbury; no wonder Charles Darwin decided to be born here.

Shopping

The shopping in Shrewsbury is some of the best in Shropshire (try repeating that five times as fast as possible for a tongue-twister). The two main retail hubs are the Darwin Shopping Centre, which is great for high-street fashion with places like Topshop, River Island, Monsoon, H&M, and M&S, and the Pride Hill Shopping Centre, which blends national retailers like Next with lots of great independents. You’ll also find House of Fraser amidst lots of other excellent options on the High Street.

A short drive south of the town centre is Meole Brace Retail Park, home to Shrewsbury’s TK Maxx, and a little further down the road, horticulturalists will want to pay a visit to Dobbies Garden Centre.

Getting Around

If you’re coming to Shrewsbury from further afield, you can fly into Birmingham Airport, Manchester Airport, or Liverpool John Lennon Airport, as they’re all about an hour away from town.

By train, Shrewsbury Railway Station is your sole option. The pretty station was Shropshire’s first, having been built in 1848, and remains its busiest. There’s an hourly service to Birmingham New Street, while many services to Wales either start or pass through Shrewsbury, hence why it’s known as the ‘Gateway to Wales’.

If you’re arriving via bus or coach, Shrewsbury Bus Station is conveniently located right next to our Shrewsbury Town Centre hotel.
