Follow in the footsteps of the rich and famous of the Victorian era with a trip to Scarborough, the original, quintessential British seaside resort. Our Scarborough South Bay hotel provides the perfect base for exploring this wonderful corner of the Yorkshire coast. On your doorstep, of course, you can head to the beach, there’s also fantastic shopping options, Scarborough Castle, and some absolutely excellent pubs. Be sure to set aside some time to explore the North Bay part of town, too. Away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre, it’s always been the more peaceful part of Scarborough. It’s home to the stunning Peasholm Park, as well as the Open Air Theatre, and some outrageously good restaurants, including arguably the best fish and chips shop in Yorkshire.
Things to do in Scarborough
Activities
Read all about the top days out in Scarborough. Of course, everybody loves a day at the beach, so we had to start on the sand before paying a visit to Scarborough Castle, Peasholm Park, the aquarium, the cinema, and much, much more. There’s even a spa-cum-waterpark that sells beer!
Entertainment
As you’d expect from such a famous British seaside resort, there has always been a strong entertainment scene in Scarborough to keep holidaymakers busy and happy in the evenings. Iconic landmarks like The Spa and the former Odeon Cinema are still supremely popular, plus there’s SOAT too.
Places to eat
We went a bit nuts with our restaurant and café recommendations. The thing is, there are just too many excellent eateries to tell you about. The good news is you have options for every occasion. Craving a curry? Dining out for an occasion? On the hunt for fish and chips? Tummy rumbling for a big brunch? Our local guide has it all.
Nightlife
Join us on a pub crawl around the many drinking dens of Scarborough. We’ve picked out some particularly good live music options – including an underground jazz club – and thrown them in the mix with traditional pubs, stylish bars, and an always excellent micropub. You’ve got top options for pints, cocktails, whisky, gin, and the rest.
Shopping
If you fancy a bit of shopping during your stay in Scarborough, the Brunswick Shopping Centre is your main option. It’s right in the heart of town, a short walk from South Bay Beach, and literally on the doorstep of our Scarborough hotel. Here, you’ll find popular retail options including Debenhams, New Look, Roman, and Topshop. You can now also satisfy your shopping cravings with a trip to the Scarborough Market Hall and Vaults which recently enjoyed a multi-million-pound refurbishment creating a beautiful shopping centre. In the main market hall you’ll find butchers, greengrocers, a deli, and the like. The gallery and food court is home to bijou boutiques and eateries. And in the vaults you can find pretty much anything in its assortment of trinket shops and antique stores.
Getting around
As Scarborough has been a seaside resort for centuries, the town is well connected with many major towns and cities in the north of England. The A64 is the main road that leads to the town centre and links Scarborough with York and Leeds. Scarborough Railway Station is near the town centre. The station is part of the North TransPennine Express route, which connects the town to Leeds, York, Manchester and Liverpool, as well as the Yorkshire Coast Line. In terms of public transport, Scarborough has 25 main bus routes, and you’ll find Scarborough Bus Station outside the train station. By and large, Scarborough is small enough to walk around. However, if you need to catch a taxi, we do have Uber in Scarborough, as well as plenty of local taxi providers.
