Things to do in Rotherham

History, heritage, culture, sports and a buzzing food and drink scene - there’s a lot to discover and do in Rotherham, one of South Yorkshire’s biggest and best towns.

The compact town centre is a great place to start exploring. Home to the ornate 14th-century Minster and the even older Roche Abbey, you’ll also find Clifton Park, a sprawling park packed with sports pitches, a water splash zone, playground and gardens alive with flowers, fruits and vegetables. There’s plenty for families and children nearby too, notably the Magna Science Adventure Centre, a fascinating hands-on experience that explores the worlds of air, earth, fire and water, plus an action-packed Superbowl centre and the inline skate and trampoline parks.

The entertainment scene is just as lively. The Rotherham Civic Theatre is the main hub for plays, musicals, drama and stand-up comedy while SNAFU and Trades are the places to visit for live music and tribute acts. And sporting fans can cheer on Rotherham United’s football team and the professional rugby union team Rotherham Titans. Handily, our hotel in Rotherham is a short distance from both grounds and just a few miles east of the town centre.

Add in a varied and multi-cultural food and restaurant scene spanning Turkish delights, Indian classics and plenty of essential cafés, and nightlife that covers everything from gastropubs, cocktail joints and late-night dancing, and you have one of our favourite Yorkshire destinations: proud of its roots but with plenty of modern attractions and entertainment.

Getting Around

With four platforms and regular connections to other Yorkshire hubs including Leeds, Doncaster and Sheffield, Rotherham Train Station is a well-connected travel terminal in the heart of the town. Re-opened in 2012 after a large refurbishment, the station is a neat mix of the old and new with a glass-walled footbridge and stylish metal canopies. The station has a manned ticket office, toilets and baby-changing facilities and a small on-site car park.

Newly reopened after a large refurb, Rotherham Interchange is the town’s main bus terminal servicing 17 million passengers each year across 1,300 daily departures. The interchange has 19 stands running services across Yorkshire and the rest of the UK and is now equipped with free Wi-Fi, a mini-mall with 20 shops, toilets and plenty of seating.

The nearest airport to Rotherham is Doncaster Sheffield Airport, with the 20-mile journey taking around 20-minutes by car or taxi and just over an hour via a connecting bus service in Doncaster. Another option is to stay the night before you travel at our Doncaster Lakeside hotel, around five miles from the airport. A relatively small terminal, Doncaster Sheffield, formerly known as Robin Hood Airport, handles around 1.5 million passengers each year with regular departures across Europe via Flybe, TUI Airways and Wizz Air.
