In its first year, Kylie Minogue played to a sell out crowd as part of her Let’s Get To It tour, which became famous for her extravagant costumes. Since then, it’s welcomed The Kinks, Backstreet Boys, Radiohead, Pet Shop Boys, Coldplay, Oasis, Green Day, Arctic Monkeys, The Prodigy, Blur, McFly, Tinie Tempah and many, many more.
It’s not just bands that get attracted to the Pavilions, though. Some of the biggest names from the comedy circuit perform here too – John Bishop, Miranda Hart, Michael McIntyre, Ricky Gervais, Billy Connolly and Eddie Izzard have all had the people of Plymouth rolling in the aisles.
You don’t have to come just to see the big names, though. Plymouth Pavilions also host party nights throughout the year for holidays and special occasions. Internationally renowned performers are hand picked to put on a show for guests, who also get to enjoy a three-course dinner, before taking to the dance floor for after-show discos.
That’s the evening entertainment covered. But even during the daytime you can still come to the Plymouth Pavilions for a bit of fun on the ice rink. It’s worth taking a look at the session timetable on the website to find out when’s best to head down, depending on what you’re looking for – a casual skate, the ice disco, group lessons, ice hockey or any of the many sessions they offer.
The rink at the Plymouth Pavilions is a great place for children to start out on the ice, as you can hire skating aids such as seals, polar bears and penguins to help novices stay on their feet. Plus they stock skates from children’s size six all the way up to adults’ size 15.
And don’t forget that the Plymouth Raiders play their home games here at the Plymouth Pavilions. The professional basketball team have some of the most passionate fans in the UK, and matches can often sell out the arena’s 1,480-capacity. With that in mind, if you’re thinking of coming down for a game, it’s best to book tickets in advance.
Tickets are reasonably priced, ranging from £7.50, which means it’s a cheaper day out than seeing Plymouth Argyle Football Club or Plymouth Albion RFC. And let’s be honest, you can watch a decent football match or game of rugby pretty much anywhere in the country, but it’s not every day you get to see professional basketball.
