Wicken Fen Nature Reserve
The oldest National Trust nature reserve, Wicken Fen Nature Reserve is a vast wetland home to over 9,000 different species spanning plants, birds and dragonflies.
The conservation area is easy to get around thanks to the raised boardwalk that takes in flowering meadows, wetland habitats where you might spot hen harriers and bitterns and open ground home to grazing Highland cattle. The visitor centre has a cafe and shop and plenty of information points, while you can also explore the area via miles of cycling routes or take to the water on a variety of electric boat cruises.

Palace House and National Heritage Centre
Horses loom large in Newmarket, and there’s no better place to explore the town’s rich equine history than at the National Heritage Centre at Palace House in the heart of town. The fascinating five-acre site packs in a national horse racing museum, the thrilling gallery of British Sporting Art and converted stables home to retired horses and twice-daily demonstrations. The centre is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm with discounted tickets available online.
Chippenham Park Gardens
Chippenham Park Gardens might only be open to the public several times a year, but it’s worth making an effort when they do. Built in the 17th century, the 40-acre estate includes a grand lake, imposing house and stunning gardens that come alive through the seasons with snowdrops, spring bulbs and blossoms. Make sure to take a seat the Potting Shed Tearooms as well: The licensed cafe serves delicious teas and coffees, cake and snacks, perfect after a hard day exploring the grounds.
Newmarket Leisure Centre
Offering Zumba, archery, several swimming pools, soft play and a fully equipped gym, Newmarket Leisure Centre is the place to come to burn off some energy or stay in shape. The leisure centre is located on the northern edge of the town centre and is open daily to members and pay-as-you-go sessions.
All Saints Church
Built in the 13th century, All Saints Church is an impressive and still operational church on All Saints Road close to the National Heritage Centre. The Christian church is full of interesting architectural touches, including some 500-year-old gravestones and intricate gargoyles guarding the entrance.
Burwell Museum & Windmill
The name says it all – Burwell Museum & Windmill recounts the history of the mighty windmill and its impact across Suffolk. As well as discovering how they work, including first-hand demonstrations, the family-friendly site is home to nature trails, rare vintage vehicles and a recreated village shop and schoolroom providing valuable insight into how life was lived 200 years ago. The museum and windmill is open daily and located several miles north of our Newmarket hotel.
