Things to do in Lancaster

A brilliant mix of culture, history, theatre and a seriously impressive food and nightlife scene, Lancaster is one of our favourite Northern cities with plenty of things to do.

History buffs will love the compact city centre home to the imperious Lancaster Castle, the Ashton Memorial which provides stunning views across the Lake District and Williamson Park as well as the stunning Cathedral. Plus, the Lancaster City Museum is on hand to answer any and all questions about the region, dating back to the Roman invasion. The city’s noted history also includes the Lancaster Grand Theatre, one of the oldest of theatres in the UK dating back to the mid-18th century. The culture doesn’t end there as Lancaster boasts a second theatre in The Dukes, a brilliantly-modernised theatre and cinema space which covers drama, musicals, stand up comedy, family events and more.

Once you’ve finished exploring the city centre, Lancaster has an enviable location at the foot of the Lake District and a short drive from the Trough of Bowland, both of which offer incredible hiking and biking trails packed with jaw-dropping views and are just a short drive from our Lancaster hotel.

Back in Lancaster, the city centre is packed with coffee shops, cool cafés, breweries, beer gardens, wine bars, cocktail joints and late-night dancing spots, offering everything from a quiet pie and a pint to fine French dining. History, culture, the great outdoors and some incredible places to eat: Lancaster really does have it all.
