Activities in Freiburg
Hiking in and around Freiburg
Southwest Germany has a lot to offer hikers, with vineyards and the peaks of the Black Forest on Freiburg’s doorstep. Wide forest paths and winding trails on the mountainside are great for experienced mountaineers and families alike. You might even spot alpacas as you walk along the hill paths.
One of the best hiking trails leads from the districts of Günterstal or Wiehre to Kybfelsen, where you’ll find the remains of Castle Kyburg. The hike covers almost five kilometres and reaches a height of 500 meters, ending in a scenic view of Freiburg from the summit.
The Kybfelsen is located on a ridge that stretches from Mount Schauinsland towards Freiburg. The Schauinsland, the nearest mountain to Freiburg, is ideal for long hikes and there’s a wonderful view of the Black Forest from the summit. The mountains nearby are great for climbing, especially the highest mountain in Baden, the Feldberg.
