You could do worse than start at the Restaurant 22 on Chesterton Road, which was named Best Restaurant in Cambridge at the British Restaurant Awards 2017. It has a more friendly ambience than you often find at fine-dining establishments. If you really want to sample its full range, there's a five- or seven-course taster menu. Some of the highlights on offer include the truffle macaroni cheese, turbot dashi with mushroom tortellini, homemade Guinness and sourdough bread and a peanut parfait dessert.
The Oak Bistro is an elegant venue which aims to combine international cuisine with a distinctive Cambridge atmosphere. If the weather's pleasant, you can also eat outside in its walled garden. The menu utilises local produce to create modern British and European dishes, with pan-fried scallops, sea bream fillet and rump of lamb among the perennial favourites.
Midsummer House is another great place for a special occasion. Try the eight-course tasting menu and you'll be offered some remarkable specialities, such as poached kumquat, lemon thyme ice cream and coriander white chocolate. Midsummer House even does liquid nitrogen rose petals, which is one of the most fashionable things around when it comes to food!
There are attractive views across Parker's Piece if you visit Cotto, where veal kidneys and sweetbreads with mustard sauce are one of the highlights of the menu. It also offers a highly unusual chocolate piano among its desserts.
For an authentic Greek dining experience, try the Olive Grove, which you’ll find on Regent Street. Here, you can sample everything from mixed meze to the ever-popular beef stifado.
For flavours from even further afield, there's the Navadhanya, described by many at the best Indian restaurant in Cambridge. You'll certainly find curry dishes with a difference here, including deep-fried soft-shell crab, monkfish and lamb shank. And fans of Chinese cooking should head for Hakka Seafood Chinese Restaurant on Milton Road, which aims to bring the taste of Beijing street food streets to Cambridge. Highlights of the menu include langoustines, prawns, blue shell mussels and sea bass.
Finally, just a short walk from Trinity College, one of our favourite attractions in Cambridge, is Trinity. If you want to push the boat out slightly during your stay, then this is the place to do it. Their refined menu contains dishes such as the superb braised ox cheek or fried pumpkin gnocchi. Although our tip would be to go for the oysters and one of their fabulous Champagnes. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner, and they have a kids menu if you are visiting with young family.
