Thanks to our famous Premier Inn Breakfast, we know a thing or two about starting your day off right with a plateful of sausages, bacon, beans and – of course – a slice or two of toast. But with so many ways to enjoy this breakfast staple, we started wondering – how do you like yours?
We decided to ask 2000 adults what the perfect slice of toast looks like to them – and people had a lot of opinions! A whopping 52% admitting to being ‘fussy’ about their toast in the morning, with 22% also suggesting that the way someone likes theirs can reflect deeper truths about their personality.
How brits like their toast
Our breakfast survey says that the winner of the perfect slice of toast is . . .
According to our poll, the perfect toast looks like this – a slice of white bread, cooked to a warm, golden colour, cut into rectangles, and served warm (not too hot!).
Just 8% like theirs ‘well done’ with a deeply browned finish, while 15% would opt for a lightly toasted slice. More than a third (35%) reckon toast ‘tastes better’ when cut into rectangles – the most popular shape – with triangles coming second (32%).

Chris Seaby, who develops our breakfast menu and commissioned the research to understand more about breakfast habits, said:
“People across the UK love a cooked breakfast and as our research shows, toast is clearly a staple – which is something we know a lot about at Premier Inn. We serve over 22 million unlimited breakfasts each year and thousands of slices of toast are enjoyed each day in our hotels. From the bread choice to the level of toasting, through to what we put on top of it, toast preferences are very individual, which is why it is so important to us to offer a good variety of options, including gluten free.”
That wasn’t all that was revealed from our breakfast survey. It also emerged that 78% believe toast is an essential part of a full English breakfast, with 19% often using toast as a ‘breakwater’ to stop other items touching.
White bread was voted best for toasting by 49% of respondents, with 24% preferring wholemeal and 16% opting for sourdough, according to the OnePoll.com figures.
Just under half said they chow down on a few slices first thing in the morning at breakfast – the most common time for toast lovers – while 14% enjoy it as a mid-morning snack. Interestingly, 35% reckon they’re more likely to tuck into a few slices of toast if they’re in a hotel than they are at home!
Greg Tucker, a food psychologist who we spoke to ahead of National Toast Day, added: “Toast is one of the first forays the growing child makes into preparing their food - quite possibly their first venture into ‘cooking’.
“This is a stage of growing independence and establishing an individual identity within the home. Little wonder then that this remains a key part of how we self-identify through our lives as formative choices last into adulthood. You leak clues to your personality by your choices - this is a very personal choice so speaks volumes.
“Toast is bread changed to suit us. Our choices - like our fashion sense, our friends and our favourite books - are all a reflection of our personality. They are signals of identity - they can be read by others - now find out what they are reveal about you.”
