The world’s most eye-catching winter cities
Looking further afield, our global study revealed even more enchanting winter scenes that captured people's attention. Topping the international rankings is Boston, USA, while York in the UK earns second-place on the global stage.
Dublin lands in third place with 2.51 seconds of viewing time. The Irish capital's Georgian squares and historic buildings look like something from a fairytale in winter, while the city’s traditional pubs are the perfect spot to escape the chilly evenings with a warm Irish coffee.
Ranking fourth with 2.40 seconds, Cologne is Germany's most enchanting winter city, according to our study. The city's chocolate museum becomes even more appealing in cold weather, while people love looking at the traditional brauhauses. While many German markets are among Europe's most celebrated, Cologne’s Christmas market beneath the Gothic cathedral creates an especially unforgettable scene during the festive season.
Stockholm, in fifth place, proves why Scandinavian cities are synonymous with winter. The Swedish capital embraces the season with typical Nordic flair, and the streets of Gamla Stan (Old Town) become even more charming under snow. The famous ICEBAR offers a unique experience where temperatures drop even lower than the average -1°C outdoors, but for those who’d rather stay away from the cold, museums like the Vasa and ABBA provide fun and cosy places to escape to.
Cappadocia places in sixth, with its famous fairy chimneys and cave hotels looking particularly beautiful when dusted with snow. Winter visitors often have the region to themselves, with fewer tourists than in peak seasons, and the iconic hot air balloons still rise over the landscape even in winter.
Next on the rankings, Tokyo proves that winter beauty isn't just about snow. The winter illuminations in Japan’s capital are among the world's most spectacular, particularly in areas like Shibuya and Marunouchi. Traditional hot springs (onsen) become even more popular, while winter festivals like the Toshino-Ichi market provide authentic cultural experiences.
The remaining global destinations that wrap up the top 10 most eye-catching in winter are Vienna, Austria and Italy’s Milan, in ninth and tenth place respectively. Interestingly, European cities dominate the list, accounting for nearly half of the 30 cities ranked, while North America comes in second with six entries.

Methodology:
A list of 72 cities from around the world that experience winter from December 21st to March 22nd was compiled using desk research. To conduct the research, 100 global participants were shown a series of images of these cities during winter. Using eye-tracking software, the average length of time the participants spent looking at the image of each destination (average fixation time - seconds) was recorded. The average fixation times were then ranked from high to low, to reveal the cities that people spent the longest time looking at. These cities were the most eye-catching, and therefore the most beautiful.
