11/07/2018 | 13-year-old genius Rahul puts his IQ to the test to power ‘Jersey Royal Suite’ to mark the opening of new Premier Inn

In a world first, Child Genius star and Britain’s brightest kid, Rahul has powered a hotel suite using Jersey Royal potatoes. A video released today by Visit Jersey shows the 12-year-old lighting up the newly named ‘Jersey Royal Suite’ at the brand new Premier Inn hotel in St. Helier.

Using just one of the tiny potatoes, Rahul powered a series of appliances in the suite using seasonal Jersey Royals from a local farm, channelling the power via an electronic prototyping platform. After some trials and errors, the potato successfully powered a lamp, hairdryer, kettle and the pièce de résistance – a huge neon ‘Jersey Royal Suite’ sign.

Famous for more than potatoes, Jersey is the perfect getaway for families. It’s an island of rediscovery; packed full of fresh produce, endless activities to experience and beautiful beaches. The new Premier Inn hotel is based in the capital of the island, St. Helier, allowing guests to easily explore all areas of Jersey.

Child Genius star, Rahul says I love testing my skills – it’s the best way to learn. When this challenge came my way, I knew it was going to be so much fun. Powering the Jersey Royal Suite at the new St. Helier Premier Inn was tough to crack at times, but the end result was so rewarding and I’m so proud that I was able to make everything work!

He continued, “I’d never been to Jersey before so not only did I get to have fun experimenting with science, technology and potatoes, but my family and I were also able to explore the beautiful island. I really enjoyed visiting and would like to go back again soon.

Vivieanne Carr, New Openings Manager at Premier Inn said: We are so excited to have opened the first ever Premier Inn in Jersey which is in such a great spot in central St. Helier. Rahul’s world first achievement to power the ‘Jersey Royal Suite’ using Jersey Royal potatoes definitely makes this our most unique hotel opening to date.
