Despite extensive damage during the Second World War, all of Braunschweig’s best-known monuments have been beautifully restored. And the first stop on your sightseeing tour has to be Burgplatz square – you’ll be surrounded by a marvellous ensemble of historic buildings on all sides. These include Dankwarderode Castle, which has a historic medieval collection of weapons and clothing. There’s also the St Blasii Cathedral and a collection of beautiful, traditional, half-timbered houses. But they’re all surrounding the main event - the famous bronze Brunswick Lion that’s the symbol of the city!

Is it a building? Is it a sculpture? Go to the Happy Rizzi House and decide for yourself! Situated in the Magniviertel, one of the city’s oldest quarters, this quirky piece of art is the work of internationally acclaimed American pop artist, James Rizzi. The building is made up of nine connected blocks that have been covered with colourful cartoons and cute motifs. Inside it’s an office that’s closed to the public, but it makes for a great photo!
