History of Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace traces its origins back to a house owned by the Duke of Buckingham, though its prominence for the royal family came under the reign of Queen Victoria. The monarchs following Queen Victoria have kept Buckingham Palace the primary residence of the royal family.
While the palace remained closed to the public for much of its existence, save for a few select dates or events, an agreement in 2009 enabled Buckingham Palace to have more visitors than at any other point in history.
One favourite sight for visitors to the palace has been the Changing of the Guard in the forecourt. Inside, the state rooms and the Queen's Gallery offer a glimpse into the royal life and the art collected by the monarchy over the years.
