Wish you were here! Meet our Premier Inn Postcard Poets this summer

Postcard Poets Postcard Poets

Summer holidays are officially here, with friends and family off exploring all the best attractions in the UK and beyond while posting all their favourite holiday snaps. But the rise in social media posts got us thinking about the original holiday text message – sending postcards!

And we’re not alone. A massive 73% of people in the UK say they have fond memories attached to writing and receiving postcards. Additionally, 66% of Brits say that sending a postcard fills them with joy, but the vast majority of the UK (61%) haven’t sent one in over five years.

So, this summer, we thought we’d breathe new life into this beloved tradition! We’re championing the great British postcard with a series of new and original prints, all designed to inspire people across the nation to put pen to paper and share their holiday memories with loved ones.

Preserving cherished memories

Additionally, we’re excited to be launching our very own limited-edition Postcard Poets service, which will help people puzzling over prose find the right words when it comes to sharing all the best bits of their great British getaways. Posted at four of the UK’s best staycation destinations from Friday 29th July until Sunday 31st July, our guests can have their summer holidays beautifully transcribed in minutes by a professional poet – and you can get involved on social media, too!

The service comes as new research conducted by YouGov on behalf of Premier Inn revealed the sharp decline in people sending and receiving postcards in recent years. Four out of five people surveyed said they have received a postcard at some point in the past, but over half (61%) haven’t received one in over five years. Despite this, over half (59%) agree that this method of sharing holiday memories is much more thoughtful than just sending a text message, and 61% say that is a great way to communicate with those who aren’t on social media.

Use our special Premier Inn post-boxes

Our Postcard Poets’ mission is to help people across the UK share and preserve those cherished holiday memories after the research revealed that 54% said that it’s a better way to cement memories for years to come.

Guests will be encouraged to share these holiday memories on one of five beautifully designed postcards created by artist Hollie Startup, featuring artwork of picturesque landscapes across British staycations hotspots such as Torquay, Oxford, Porthmadog, Scarborough, and the wider British Isles.

These can then be posted for free at participating hotels using our special Premier Inn post-boxes.

All postcards – and some top tips on how to write the perfect message – are also available on our Premier Inn website.

Top five tips:
  1. Take a minute to think of your favourite holiday moments so far. This can be anything from attractions you’ve seen to new food you’ve tasted, or even fun activities you’ve taken part in. Space on the average postcard is limited, so planning the things you’d like to mention can help you make the most of the space.

  2. Set the scene. Describe the location you’ve decided to visit on your UK break, including your hotel, the local area, and (of course) the weather!

  3. Share something you’ve learned on your trip. Perhaps it’s some history trivia, a local tradition or an unusual cuisine cooked in a special way. Don’t be afraid to go into detail to really bring what you’re describing to life!

  4. Say it in writing. Whether you’re a literary master or not, the simple act of picking up a pen and writing a postcard for a loved one is enough to make someone’s day – and means so much more than just a text! It also acts a heartfelt souvenir and helps solidify fond memories for years to come. Who doesn’t love displaying a postcard on the fridge?

  5. Pick the right postcard for you! They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so consider the best option to help tell your story and capture the essence of your holiday.
