It’s the most wonderful time of the year – but let’s face it, Christmas isn’t without its challenges! Especially if you happen to find yourself single or travelling alone over the holidays…
Our new research discovered that solo sleepers are far more likely to draw the short straw when it comes to festive sleeping arrangements.
For example, almost half of those we asked had slept on something other than a bed when visiting relatives over the festive period, with sofas, blow-up beds and the floor being the most common options.

No Rest for Merry Singletons
Parents are the worst culprits for displacing people from their beds over Christmas (27%), with cousins and siblings coming in a close second (23%) and third (22%). Our research found that this was most prevalent in London where house sizes tend to be smaller than other areas of the UK** - which of course causes more of a squeeze for families each winter! People in the capital are most likely to have to put up with sleeping somewhere other than a bed when visiting family for Christmas (57%). Interestingly, the most comfortable festive sleepers in the UK are in Belfast, where only 37% of people have slept somewhere other than their bed when visiting family during Christmas.
Our survey also revealed that there’s a pre-determined ‘family pecking order’ when it comes to the best sleeping arrangements at Christmas – a number which rises to 54% for those aged between 25-34! One heart-warming stat that was uncovered though was that over half of those asked said they would give up their bed voluntarily so that other family members could enjoy a better night’s sleep – now that’s the Christmas spirit!
So, to highlight the unusual sleeping arrangements people find themselves in over Christmas, Hanukkah, and other festive celebrations, we’re excited to share that Gogglebox star and popular TikToker George Baggs has joined forces with us at Premier Inn – the experts in resting easy – to launch a brand-new Christmas single! This witty version of the classic Christmas carol ‘God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen’ sees Baggs describe the all too relatable situation where single members of the family are often last in line when it comes to bedroom allocation.
Premier Inn Managing Director Simon Ewins said:
“It’s no surprise that with Christmas and Hanukkah on the horizon, many homes will be joyfully packed to the rafters with visiting relatives. What our research makes clear however is that it’s single people who are asked more often than most to give up their beds. When we found out that the solo travellers were drawing the short straw, we simply had to do something to make sure they’re able to rest easy this Christmas, and we hope our bedding helps turn those restless nights into silent nights – or of course, there’s always room in a Premier Inn hotel. We’ve loved working with George to help spread the word – single people, this one’s for you! Who knows – could this be the new Christmas number one?”
